General Information
Perfect for a romantic break, an escape from 21st century living or to celebrate a special occasion, it is hard to believe that somewhere so beautiful and unique lies just across the Channel, only 70 minutes drive from Calais. A medieval gem criss-crossed by canals and cobbled streets, Bruges never fails to amaze and delight its visitors.
Bruges is quite literally an open-air museum and its compact centre is perfect for relaxed exploration on foot. The dizzying height of the Belfry tower is the main landmark and the 366-step climb to the top rewards you with breathtaking views and a close-up of the 18th century clock which rings 47 bells every quarter-hour. If youre in need of a rest after this medieval high-rise experience, then numerous bars, cafes and restaurants crowd the attractive market square at the foot of the Belfry.
Exploring the art treasures of Bruges works up an appetite and there are numerous temptations around every corner: from a restaurant meal of mussels and frites washed down by the local Straffe Hendrik beer, to sampling hand-made, fresh cream chocolates, to calling in at a teahouse to indulge in delicious waffles and pastries. If youre looking for souvenirs, Bruges is world-famous for its lace and chocolate shops. There are Saturday morning markets at t Zand and Beursplein and some superb antique shops. And if you simply want to watch the world go by, you can do no better than a romantic canal cruise or relaxing horse-drawn carriage ride.
